“Anderaith has been attacked.” Viktor’s first words hit the others like a ton of bricks.

“And there have been quite a number of casualties. Why Axel Rossum hadn’t taken his role of Chief of Staff seriously enough to prepare the defences of the city, I have no clue.” The Prince was furious and with good reason. He had felt his nerves build up even more before the meeting had even started, as his father had ordered he take the lead and talk through his findings. Viktor had tried not to let the pressure get to him but, it seemed an impossible task.

Hathor raised a kind hand up at his son.

“Viktor, calm down. Breathe, think through what you’ve gathered and try to tell us again what should be done.” He instructed. The Emperor had his ways of training his children for the roles they were fated to inherit and unfortunately, throwing them in the deep end was one way.

It worked after all, it made the Redbane children think and each time they had resolved an issue they only came out more confident in themselves.

Viktor was just letting himself panic and make a mess out of a solution he already had in mind. It was normal for such a thing to happen and the Prince was relieved to see his father did not get angry with him for it.

“Reynald has run off to Marcus Valenti,” he added in, reciting the information he had written down in the small council within Quartz Hall.

“What?” Hathor cried.

“Reynald! The bastard, what had Marcus offered him that I could not?”

Adelaide folded her arms over as she leaned back against her chair.

“I told you there was something off about him.”

“And I should have listened.” Hathor admitted to her. He looked to Viktor for an answer and found his son thinking hard.

“The attack on Anderaith must have been a distraction. If I know Marcus Valenti well, which unfortunately I do, he’ll likely use the time it takes for us to settle things down in Anderaith to plan a much bigger and riskier move.” He dropped the papers he held onto the desk and rubbed at his tired eyes.

“He’s going to attack Aarengoth?”

“Are you sure about that? That does sound like an incredibly risky move and, unless he has something he can use against us to try to lure us into surrendering, he’d only be planning his own funeral.” Saff argued.

Viktor’s pale grey eyes lit up a little.

“Gods’ damn him.” he breathed.

Adelaide shrugged at him.

“What?” she asked.

“It seems your assassins were right, little sister. They hadn’t plotted to kill Nicademius at all, it was Marcus. Shit, he must know about your potential engagement to the Prince and has been planning to end it before the deal could be sealed.” He explained.

Adelaide sat up at this.

“Why would he care about my engagement to a foreign Prince?” she asked.

Viktor frowned.

“If you marry Nicademius, that immediately puts him in line for the throne of Iradas – and because when he does come for Aarengoth, you are going to be mighty high on his list of priorities.
